SUBSTIFIX® 8301 Series

Damping solution additive for reducing the isopropanol content.

Isopropanol (IPA) is generally used in damping systems to reduce surface tension and to improve transfer characteristics in the damping system. Under standard conditions the IPA content ranges between 8 to 12 volume percent. SUBSTIFIX-HD permits to limit the addition of alcohol to 3 -5 volume percent. With certain configurations of damping systems alcohol additions can be dispensed with entirely. Its special properties are:

  • Prevents ink roller stripping.

  • The IPA concentration in the damping solution can be reduced to 0 to 5 volume percent.

  • Very fast plate runoff.

  • The pH is stabilized between 5.0 and 5.3.

  • Corrosion inhibited.

  • Stable ink/damping solution balance.

  • Suitable for all types of printing plates.

Direction of use

The turning speed of all doctor roller may need to be increased, depending on the type of damping roller material and the isopropanol concentration in the damping solution. The amount of damping solution on the plate will, however, not be increased in this way.

The use of ceramic rollers and/or hydrophilic rubber grades was found to be an advantage for the entire elimination of IPA.

It is important of course to make sure the damping rollers are well adjusted and the damping solution sufficiently cooled (8 - 10 oC).

Some specially pigmented inks, e.g. metallic gloss inks, may not always run well with low isopropanol concentration in the damping solution.

In any case, the isopropanol content should be reduced step by step.

Special characteristics

  • 8301  09 for water with a hydrogen carbonate content under 250 mg/lit.

  • 8301 19 for water with a hydrogen carbonate content above 250 mg/lit.

  • The recommended addition of the SUBSTIFIX 8301 series is 3 to 5%.
